Erik Taal is opgeleid als sociaal psycholoog. Zijn expertise ligt op het terrein van de gezondheidspsychologie. Hij is gepromoveerd op onderzoek naar patiëntenvoorlichting en zelf-management bij mensen met reumatoïde artritis.

Zijn onderzoeksinteresses liggen op het gebied van empowerment en zelfmanagement van patiënten met chronische ziekten, en evaluatie van instrumenten voor het meten van patiënt gerapporteerde gezondheidsuitkomsten

Hij geeft onderwijs in de bachelor Psychologie en de mastertrack Gezondheidspsychologie en Technologie.
