Dr. ir. Cristina is assistent-professor van de Human-Centred Design groep en het DesignLab aan de Universiteit Twente.

Cristina heeft een Ph.D. (cum laude) in Computer Science en een dubbele MSc (cum laude) in Cognitive Science en Human-Media interaction. Haar promotieonderzoek naar "robothings" voerde ze uit met Prof. Vanessa Evers (Human-Media Interaction groep, Universiteit Twente) en met Prof. Malte Jung (Robots in Groups Lab (Cornell University, VS).

Cristina's onderzoek richt zich op het ontwikkelen van methoden, gereedschappen en technologie die maatschappelijke overgangen ondersteunen naar een toekomst van rechtvaardigheid, zorg en solidariteit tussen gemeenschappen, de natuur en kunstmatige middelen. Cristina richt zich op het ontwikkelen van methodologieën geïnspireerd door ontwerponderzoek die maatschappelijke transities kunnen ondersteunen door middel van transdisciplinariteit. De belangrijkste toepassingsgebieden van haar onderzoek zijn maatschappelijke uitdagingen gerelateerd aan (gezondheids)zorg en technologie, de toekomst van werk in tijden van automatisering en digitalisering, gezondheidstransities en technologie.

Samen met collega's van DesignLab van de Universiteit Twente ontwikkelt ze Responsible Futuring, een transdisciplinaire aanpak om maatschappelijke uitdagingen aan te pakken met academische en niet-academische gemeenschappen. Hiervoor combineert Cristina kritische theorieën, speculatief en posthumaan/meer dan menselijk ontwerp, waarbij ze methoden en tools creëert om gedachten, ideeën en reflexiviteit van concreet naar tastbaar te maken door middel van visuele scenario's en prototypes en zo de status-quo uitdaagt.

Cristina leidt ook de Social Justice and AI-netwerken, een Nederlands netwerk van academici, studenten en activisten die zich inzetten om de ontmenselijkende en onderdrukkende effecten van AI en AI-technologie met belichaming te verminderen en te overwinnen en sociale en ecologische rechtvaardigheid te bevorderen.

Haar bekroonde werk heeft vele onderscheidingen gekregen, waaronder de NWO Wetenschapsprins voor DEI-initiatieven (2022), de Nederlandse Hoog Onderwijs Prijs (2022), en de Google Women Techmaker Award en beurs (2018). Ze wordt regelmatig uitgenodigd als spreker op evenementen (bijv. TEDx), symposia en internationale conferenties. Cristina publiceert regelmatig op gerenommeerde conferentiepodia (CHI-conferentie, HRI-conferentie, DIS, CSCW-conferentie) en is nauw betrokken bij academische diensten voor ACM SIGCHI en Design Research Society.
