Daphne van der Wal is hoogleraar Spatial Water Quality and Aquatic Systems bij de afdeling Environmental Resources, Faculteit Geo-Informatiewetenschappen en Aardobservatie (ITC) van de Universiteit Twente, Enschede. Daarnaast is zij senior onderzoeker bij het NIOZ Koninklijk Nederlands Instituut voor Ondezoek der Zee, afdeling Estuariene en Delta Systemen (EDS), Yerseke.

Zij heeft een achtergrond in de fysische geografie (PhD, 1999, Universiteit van Amsterdam), en was tussen 1 oktober 1999 en 1 januari 2002 postdoc bij Royal Holloway, Universteit van London. 

Zij onderzoekt hoe estuaria, delta's en kustsystemen functioneren, met name ten behoeve van waterkwaliteit, biodiversiteit en kustveiligheid (nature-based solutions). Hiervoor gebruikt zij aardobservatie-technieken.

Daphne van der Wal is expert in remote sensing van kusten, estuaria en delta's. Zij richt zich vooral op het begrijpen van de kustzone, met name op de wisselwerking tussen fysische processen en de biologie. Onderwerpen zijn bijv. hoe watersystemen reageren op klimaatverandering en menselijke invloed. Daarnaast kijkt zij hoe kustecosystemen de mens kunnen helpen (bijv als natuurlijke oplossingen om overstromingsrisico's te verkleinen).

Zij gebruikt remote sensing (optisch, radar/SAR, laseraltimetrie, thermisch) vanaf satellieten, vliegtuig of de grond, gecombineerd met statistische en fysische (radiative transfer) modellen, en big data analyse.

Zij heeft expertise in: remote sensing, geo-informatie, waterkwaliteit, rivier/zee interacties, schorren/kwelders/wetlands, biodiversiteit, kustprocessen, biogeomorfologie, nature based solutions.
