Ellen Giebels is sinds 2009 hoogleraar Sociale Psychologie van Conflict en Veiligheid bij de Universiteit Twente. Haar onderzoek richt zich op hoe mensen en teams omgaan met conflicten, spanningen en dreiging, en welke (technologische) methoden en interventies kunnen worden ingezet in situaties waar veel op het spel staat. 

Na een PhD op het gebied van zakelijke onderhandelingen (Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, 1999) vindt veel van haar huidige onderzoek, onderwijs en advies plaats binnen het veiligheidsdomein. 

In 2012 ontving ze voor haar werk op het gebied van gijzelingsonderhandelingen en andere ‘high-stakes’ conflicten de Rubin Theory-to-practice-award, gesponsord door de International Association for Conflict Management (IACM) en het Harvard University Program on Negotiation. 

Naast haar bestuurlijke werkzaamheden als o.a. vice-decaan onderzoek en toezichthouder, maakte ze in 2015 deel uit van het onderzoeksteam dat het functioneren van de Nederlandse overheid na de MH17-ramp officieel evalueerde. In 2017-2018 was ze voorzitter van een onafhankelijke commissie die in opdracht van de staatssecretaris van Defensie, onderzoek deed naar het sociaal veiligheidsklimaat binnen de krijgsmacht (Commissie Giebels). 

Samen met Martin Euwema schreef zij het standaardwerk Conflictmanagement, onderhandeling en mediation, waarvan in 2025 de vierde editie verscheen (Noordhoff).

Ellen is fellow van de Association for Psychological Science en lid van de Sociaal- Wetenschappelijke Raad van de KNAW. Ook is ze lid van de Wetenschappelijke Adviesraad Politie.  

Momenteel is ze een van de hoofdonderzoekers van een tienjarig door NWO gefinancierd programma waarin onder andere historici, bestuurskundigen, psychologen en filosofen gezamenlijk onderzoeken hoe samenlevingen beter kunnen leren omgaan met crises: Adapt!

In februari 2023 berichtte de volkskrant over ons NWO project over de gevolgen van COVID-19 pandemie op criminaliteitscijfers.
