Frederik R. Wurm (Prof. Dr. habil.) is hoogleraar en group leader van de groep “Duurzame Polymeerchemie” ("Sustainable Polymer Chemistry" SPC) aan de Universiteit Twente. De groep is gevestigd in de Faculteit Natuurwetenschappen en Technologie (TNW) in de Department Moleculen en Materialen ("Molecules and Materials", M&M).

De SPC-groep ontwerpt polymeermaterialen met moleculair gedefinieerde functies die leiden tot macroscopische eigenschappen. In de afgelopen jaren hebben vooral biogebaseerde en biologisch afbreekbare materialen de focus van Frederiks onderzoek gevormd en de hoofdlijn van de SPC-groep opgebouwd. De expertise van de SPC-groep omvat de synthese van (bio)afbreekbare polymeren en nanodragers voor landbouw- of biomedische toepassingen, maar ook andere potentiële toepassingen worden momenteel bestudeerd - altijd met een focus op de moleculaire controle van de eigenschappen van de uiteindelijke materialen. Frederiks favoriete biopolymeer is lignine, dat ook de kern vormt van verschillende onderzoeksprojecten, zoals biologisch afbreekbare nano- en microdragers voor de landbouw. SPC onderzoekt ook nieuwe synthetische strategieën en toepassingen van (bio)afbreekbare polyfosfoesters (PPE's) of ontwikkelt nieuwe protocollen voor goed gedefinieerde polyaminen door levende polymerisatie van aziridines.

Frederik heeft meer dan 250 peer-reviewed artikelen gepubliceerd en heeft meer dan 19.000 citaties (h-index: 66, November 2025).
