I am a full professor at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, and Computer Science, Chair Design and Analysis of Communication Systems, of the University of Twente (UT). I received my M.Sc. in Computer Science from University of Twente, the Netherlands in 1988, worked as a research staff member at the same university and received my Ph.D. in Telecommunications in 1995. I have also held a part-time position as researcher at KPN research, the Netherlands, from 1989 until 1991. From 1995 until 2003, I was with Ericsson EuroLab Netherlands, first as a senior strategic engineer, and from 1999 as a research department manager. From 1998 until 2003 I was also a part-time senior researcher at the University of Twente. From 2015 until 2018 I have been program director of the Computer Science and Internet Science & Technology bachelor and master programs of University of Twente. As of September 2020, I am the chair of the Design and Analysis of Communication Systems (DACS) group at the University of Twente.

In 2011, I was a visiting professor at INRIA Rocquencourt, Paris. In 2002, I was a visiting associate professor at the University of California, Irvine. In 1992, I have performed part of my Ph.D. research at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.

My area of research is Wireless Networks & Mobility. I am particularly interested in architectures, algorithms, and protocols for Cellular, Ad-hoc, and Vehicular Networks.

My area of research is   Wireless Networks & Mobility. I am interested in both novel networking concepts (e.g., for 5G/6G networks and short-range technologies such as IEEE 802.11 or Bluetooth), and their applications, e.g., for coordinated automated driving, bicycle safety, or mobility management. I am particularly interested in sustainability of communication networks.
