Jaap Buurke studeerde Fysiotherapie in Enschede en behaalde zijn diploma in 1982.
In 2005 promoveerde hij aan de Universiteit Twente voor zijn werk op herstel van lopen na een beroerte. Hij is coördinator van het cluster Revalidatie Technologie bij Roessingh Research and Development, hoogleraar “Technology Supported Human Movement analysis” aan de Universiteit Twente, adjunct professor aan de Northwestern University Chicago (USA), senior onderzoeker bij Roessingh, Centrum voor Revalidatie, medische wetenschappelijk directeur van de IMDI-SPRINT en voorzitter van “Neurorevalidatie-Keypoint. Hij is gespecialiseerd in bewegingsanalyse en is actief betrokken bij diverse (inter)nationale projecten gericht op bewegingsanalyse, revalidatie robotica en actieve ondersteunende hulpmiddelen.
