Mijn onderzoekslijn

Ik ben onderzoeker op het gebied van klinische psychologie. Een belangrijke uitdaging in mijn vakgebied is de toegankelijkheid van behandelingen en het fluctuerende en heterogene karakter van psychische stoornissen. Mijn doel is om interventies te ontwikkelen die toegankelijk zijn en dynamische en geïndividualiseerde ondersteuning bieden om mentale gezondheid te bevorderen. Mijn werk richt zich op het ontwikkelen en evalueren van just-in-time adaptieve interventies (JITAIs). JITAIs zijn mobile (mHealth) interventies met het doel ondersteuning op kritieke momenten via mobiele apparaten te bieden, waardoor de behandeling overal beschikbaar is en kan worden afgestemd op individuele behoeften.

In het grootste deel van mijn werk gebruik ik de onderzoeksmethode van micro-randomized trials om te onderzoeken wanneer en hoe JITAIs evidence-based moeten worden toegepast. Met behulp van MRTs zijn causale conclusies mogelijk over de momentane effecten van interventieopties binnen JITAIs en de werkingsmechanismen van deze interventies. Ik combineer deze methode met ecological momentary assessment (EMA) om te onderzoeken op welke momenten in het dagelijks leven JITAIs werken en hoe ze werken. Ik gebruik deze aanpak in verschillende projecten bij verschillende (sub)klinische populaties om JITAIs te optimaliseren en te evalueren, waaronder mensen met een bipolaire stoornis, depressieve en angststoornissen en langdurige rouwklachten.

Ik ben een van de eerste onderzoekers wereldwijd die leiding geeft aan een onderzoekslijn naar JITAIs op het gebied van geestelijke gezondheid. Ik heb meer dan 1,25 miljoen euro (900.000 euro als hoofdaanvrager) aan financiering ontvangen, voornamelijk voor projecten met betrekking tot JITAIs voor mentale gezondheid, micro-randomized trials en EMA (zie ‘Projecten’). In 2025 heb ik een VENI-beurs voor de ontwikkeling en evaluatie van JITAIs voor bipolaire stoornissen toegekend gekregen. Ik ben op dit moment de dagelijkse supervisor van 6 fte junior academisch personeel: 1 junior onderzoeker (1 fte) en 5 promovendi (5 fte). Bovendien ben ik begeleider bij een postdoc project naar de effectiviteit van JITAIs voor depressie. Ik ben (co-)auteur van meer dan 40 artikelen in peer-reviewed wetenschappelijke tijdschriften.

Onderwijs en andere activiteiten

Ik heb colleges gegeven aan meer dan 500 psychologiestudenten over bipolaire stoornis, positieve psychologie en EMA. Ik heb meer dan 60 bachelor- en masterscripties begeleid (als eerste begeleider) en in het verleden verschillende bachelor-/mastercursussen gecoördineerd. Ik ben begeleider van twee klinisch psychologen in opleiding.

Ik ben vicevoorzitter van de examencommissie Behavioural Sciences aan de Universiteit Twente. Ik heb meer dan 40 artikelen beoordeeld voor tijdschriften als NPJ Digital Medicine, Health Psychology Review, Nature Human Behavior, Behavior Research and Therapy, Behavior Research Methods en Journal of Affective Disorders. Ik heb meer dan 20 presentaties gegeven tijdens (inter)nationale conferenties of seminars voor behandelaars of patiënten.
