Hoogleraar Klimaat en Rampen (Climate and Disaster Resilience) aan de Universteit Twente (ITC).

Hoofddirecteur en Chief Science Officer van het KNMI.

Lid van de Europese wetenschappelijke klimaatraad.

Voormalig directeur van het international Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre, een expertise centrum op het gebied van klimaat en rampen voor het internationale Rode Kruis, met staf over de hele wereld. Betrokken bij rampen management en risico reductie, maar ook bij de internationale klimaat onderhandelingen (UNFCCC). 

Mede-initiatiefnemer en lid van de stuurgroep van het World Weather Attribution consortium.
