De leerstoel richt zich op gepersonaliseerde eHealth-diensten voor patiƫnten met chronische ziekten en oudere volwassenen. De belangrijkste focus is het onderzoeken hoe ambulant gemeten fysiologische gegevens in combinatie met gedragsverander technieken, contextinformatie en motiverende strategieƫn kunnen leiden tot gepersonaliseerde buddysystemen die mensen effectief in staat stellen om hun gezondheid zelf te beheren, al dan niet ondersteund door professionele begeleiding.

Binnen de leerstoel wordt onderzocht hoe fysiologische gegevens teruggekoppeld kunnen worden naar patiĆ«nten om hun kennis over de ziekte/gezondheid te verbeteren, maar ook hoe deze fysiologische gegevens gebruikt kunnen worden om de patiĆ«nt te coachen, hetzij direct via technologie of via professionele support, om hun ziekte/gezondheid te managen.Ā Er wordt onderzoek verricht andere informatie naast ziekte specifieke fysiologische signalen nodig is om een holistisch beeld van de patiĆ«nt te krijgen zoals bijv attitude, self efficacy, mentale gezondheid, doelen en waarden, preferenties etc.

Wat betreft directe patiĆ«nt coaching via technologie wordt onderzocht hoe in het dagelijks leven verkregen informatie gebruikt kan worden in gepersonaliseerde feedback strategieĆ«n die mensen motiveren tot verandering maar ook om die veranderingen voor langere termijn te behouden.Ā Voor professionele begeleiding richt het onderzoek zich op intelligente recommender systemen waarbij holistische patiĆ«ntinformatie wordt vertaald in aanbevelingen voor de behandeling

Een belangrijk aspect binnen de leerstoel is dat technologie niet op zich zelfstaat, maar altijd beschouwd wordt binnen de mogelijke context(en) van gebruik. Dit betekent dat er een sociotechnische benadering gehanteerd wordt en dat eindgebruikers en andere belanghebbenden altijd sterk betrokken zijn (Citizen science, regiodeal; Up and Go na heupfractuur).

Naast het onderzoek naar de strategieĆ«n zijn evaluatie en implementatie belangrijke onderzoeksthema's. Evaluatie maakt altijd deel uit van onderzoek, beginnend met een smalle focus op de technische accuraatheid op lage TRL-niveaus tot een multilevel en multistakeholder evaluatie op hogere TRL-niveaus). Aangezien standaard klinische studies vaak niet geschikt zijn voor complexe eHealth interventies is er een focus op het ontwikkelen van nieuwe evaluatiemethodologieĆ«n die voldoende bewijs leveren voor de toegevoegde waarde van de technologie binnen de context van gebruik. Gevoed door de ā€˜second valley of deathā€™ waar eHealth interventies onder lijden is het onderzoek verbreed naar succesvolle implementatiestrategieĆ«n. Hierbij ligt de focus op strategieĆ«n die niet alleen de patiĆ«nt ondersteunen om te veranderen, maar ook de professional, de organisatie of zelfs samenwerkingsverbanden.
