Shuaib is voorzitter van ruimtelijke planning voor stedelijke veerkracht. Shuaib heeft meer dan twintig jaar ervaring in het hoger onderwijs en onderzoek aan de Makerere Universiteit in Oeganda. Hij is de oprichter en coördinator van het Urban Action Research Lab, dat onderzoek doet naar stedelijke transities en veerkracht in mondiale zuidelijke steden. Zijn onderzoek richt zich op hardnekkige stedelijke ontwikkelingsuitdagingen voor bruikbare, schaalbare, innovatieve en rechtvaardige oplossingen met betrekking tot aanpassing aan de klimaatverandering en veerkracht in mondiale zuidelijke steden. Zijn onderzoek naar informaliteit in het mondiale zuiden heeft bijgedragen aan het bewijs van gecoproduceerde kennis voor de transitie en transformatie van stedelijke systemen. Hij heeft veel gepubliceerd in internationale tijdschriften, waaronder Nature, Nature Sustainability, Nature Climate Change, World Development en Global Environmental Change. Hij was een coördinerende hoofdauteur van IPCC WGIII AR6 voor het hoofdstuk Stedelijke systemen, een hoofdauteur van het speciale IPCC-rapport over land- en klimaatverandering en hoofdauteur van het IPCC WGII AR5-rapport over menselijke nederzettingen en ruimtelijke planning.
