Shenja van der Graaf is een Associate Professor aan de Vakgroep Communicatiewetenschap aan de Universiteit Twente. Als er iets is, wat haar onderzoeksactiviteiten samenbrengt dan is het haar interesse in ‘momenten van transitie’ en de dynamiek die daarmee gepaard gaat op het vlak van innovatie en informatie- en communicatietechnologie (ICT). Haar interesses en expertise zijn productie- en consumptieculturen; media (geschiedenis) en het alledaagse leven; media infrastructuren: media / ICT (verantwoorde) innovatie en regulatie in het publieke belang; en, alternatieve economische en bestuurlijke systemen.

Van der Graaf heeft meerdere onderzoeks-, adviserende en managementfuncties bekleed, zoals in Nederland, België, Engeland, Japan en Verenigde Staten. In verschillende posities diende zij als Principal Investigator voor grote en internationale onderzoeksprojecten en werd geconsulteerd door publieke en private organisaties, zoals OECD, Europese Commissie, United Nations, Turner Networks en Microsoft. Haar kennis heeft zich ook vertaald in gast/docentschappen, lid (raad van bestuur) en publicaties. In deze hoedanigheid, is zij gecommitteerd aan het verkennen van hoe een groter begrip over mediasystemen burgers, wetenschappers en beleidsmakers kan informeren en faciliteren in Europa (en daarbuiten) om zo campagnes te bevorderen rondom technologische geletterdheid, creatieve uitdrukking, sociale gerechtigheid, en mensenrechten.

Voordat ze onderdeel uitmaakte van de BMS Faculteit, was van der Graaf Hoofdonderzoeker bij imec-SMIT, VUB en gaf leiding aan de Unit ‘Data Governance & Communities’ (voormalig ‘Smart Cities’), waar zij ook diende als lid van het bestuur.

Van der Graaf is afgestudeerd aan de Universiteit Utrecht (MA, 1999), Universiteit Leiden (Postgrad, 2000) en de London School of Economics and Political Science (PhD, 2009). Ze was een ere-fellow aan MIT’s Media Lab (ID3 Hub), een fellow aan het Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society (Harvard) en het Research Center for Information Law (University of St. Gallen), een raadgevend onderzoeker aan het Convergence Culture Consortium (MIT), een alumna van het Oxford Internet Institute (Oxford), en werkte als consultant voor Hakuhodo Inc. in Tokyo.
